As mentioned in our previous blog “Beginners Guide to SEO”, having a strong SEO presence can work wonders for your business and ultimately make a huge difference in organic revenue. However, kick-starting an SEO strategy for your business can be overwhelming especially for start-up e-commerce businesses…where do you begin!

In this blog, we will cover 4 quick and easy ways to optimise your e-commerce website and kick-start your SEO journey to help you get the most out of your website presence in search results.

4 Quick Tips to Improve SEO

Get Your Pages Indexed by Google

Indexing is when Google organises and stores information on a website and its content. Similar to an index in a library, Google index lists all of the web pages it knows about and when Google visits your site it will regularly detect new and/or updated pages to its index. If the content on your website, such as product pages or category pages does not get indexed by Google, it will not be shown in Google search results. Therefore, indexing allows your website to appear in relevant search results and allows Google to understand all your important pages - ultimately giving your site a major boost in visibility. A simple way to ensure all important pages get indexed is creating and submitting an XML sitemap to Google Search Console. An XML sitemap is a file that includes a list of important URLs of your website you want Google to index - we will deep dive into XML sitemaps and how to set them up in another blog.

Create Unique SEO Content

Another important aspect of SEO is content creation. Incorporating content that includes brand-related keywords based on user search intent can tell Google what type of users you want your site to target. For example, if my website sells womenswear my content will incorporate relevant keywords such as women’s clothing, women’s clothes for sale or women’s fashion online. By doing this I am telling Google what keywords and search terms I want to rank for. Content can be incorporated anywhere within your website whether it is on category pages, product descriptions or titles and meta descriptions.

Create Title Tags

Title tags also known as meta titles are clickable headlines that appear on Google's search engine results pages. Meta titles tell Google what your page is about, give users a quick insight into the page content, and why it is relevant to their search query. Often users decide whether to click on a site based on the piece of information presented, therefore it is important to use compelling titles for all your web pages. As SEO best practice, it is good to keep meta titles between 50 to 60 characters and to include your target keywords. Ensure all tags are unique and are not duplicates of each other as this will get your site penalised!

Write Meta Descriptions For All Pages

A meta description tag is a snippet of content that comes after the title tags and URL on Google’s search engine results page. Meta descriptions generally contain a short and relevant summary of what the page is about and should inform as well as interest users to click. Ultimately, meta descriptions act as a pitch that convinces users that your page is exactly what they’re looking for. As SEO best practice, it is ideal to keep meta descriptions between 155 to 160 characters.
