My background spans the full digital spectrum, from strategy through to execution but today my role is building the systems and team that deliver consistent, measurable performance for our clients. Over the years, I've grown our digital department from a solo function into a high-performing team, achieving Google Premier Partner status along the way. More importantly, we've built a culture rooted in accountability, clarity and continuous improvement.

As the haze of jetlag begins to wear off, it’s finally time to jot down some thoughts on my recent trip to MozCon. This is something I've been eyeing for over 8 years, eager to soak up insights from the industry's finest minds. So, needless to say, I'm beyond grateful for this chance. Plus, it's my first time in the United States, and let me tell you, it's been quite the adventure!

Flashback to over a decade ago when I first dipped my toes into the world of SEO. Back then, resources like Moz were like guiding lights in the digital wilderness. Fast forward to today, and Moz remains a cornerstone of my professional growth whilst offering invaluable SEO and Digital Marketing insights. This year's MozCon didn’t disappoint; the speakers were, as always, thought-provoking, innovative and experts in their field.

So the Key Insights I took away from MozCon:

  • Lily Ray reminded us to move beyond SEO checklists and approach our work with a critical, holistic mindset. Understanding our client's goals, audience, and SEO history is paramount to building trust and driving results.

  • Dana DiTomaso urged us to embrace "just good enough" data and focus on directional insights rather than getting bogged down in perfection. Effectiveness, she stressed, is the name of the game in modern marketing.

  • Chima Mmeje inspired us to craft personal brands that command trust, aligning our individual branding with organisational goals for maximum impact.

  • Joy Hawkins shared valuable lessons learned from client losses, emphasising the importance of retrospective thinking in improving processes and ensuring business success.

  • Wil Reynolds challenged industry norms, advocating for community building over a fixation on rankings. Genuine connections, he argued, are the true currency of digital marketing.

  • Britney Muller tackled the topic of AI, dispelling fears and encouraging us to leverage AI tools while maintaining a healthy dose of scepticism. After all, she reminded us, AI is only as good as the data we feed it.

My last key takeaway is that if I was ever to speak at MozCon, my entrance song would be Numb / Encore by Linkin Park / JAY-Z

I'm excited to bring these invaluable insights back to our team. We're committed to implementing a vast array of updates to our current SEO and Digital Marketing offerings, leveraging the latest strategies and techniques discussed at MozCon. Our goal? To continue being a leading digital agency in New Zealand, specialising in ecommerce.

With these updates, we're poised to not only meet but exceed the needs of our clients, driving tangible results and helping them thrive in an increasingly competitive digital landscape. By staying at the forefront of industry trends and innovations, we'll continue to set the standard for excellence in digital marketing in NZ.

So, here's to embracing every learning opportunity, fostering meaningful connections, and continuing to push the boundaries of digital marketing. Until next time, MozCon.
